Mavis’ father was always out somewhere with other women. Her mother, Mrs. Grant saw Mavis as her only support. She couldn’t stand losing her. In the meantime, she thought Mavis dirty, since she was “their” child. She compulsively and hysterically expected Mavis to be outstanding and extraordinary to win Mr. Grant back.
