A year before Mavis’ death, that is, when Mavis and Scott were 14, Scott invited Mavis to sneak out to watch the fireworks on her birthday on a nearby rooftop.

He boasted that he had got a new video tape recorder and he couldn’t wait to try it on Mavis. Since they had successfully sneaked out several times, Mavis agreed.

I was stuffed into Scott’s bag with the VTR, carrying the tapes.

At dusk, Scott arrived under Mavis’ bedroom window. Mavis, for her sight was blocked by the protruding roof, shouted in a low voice, “Scott—! Where are you?”
